Welcome to Amethyst House, San Jose’s New Restorative Self-Care Space!

What are healing services and why should I try them?

There are many options out there when it comes to healing services.  As a result, it can be hard to decide which type best fits your needs.  Modern Americans are familiar with Therapeutic Massage, Acupuncture, Acupressure, Reflexology, Life Coaching, Spa Services, Yoga, Meditation Classes, Naturopathy, Beauty Services and more.  Yet other types of healing services are just now hitting their stride in mainstream.  These services tend to fall under one of these umbrellas: Alternative Wellness, Somatic Healing, Sound Healing, Sound Bathing, Energy Medicine, Reiki Healing, Aromatherapy, Plant Therapy, Intuitive Healing and more.  At Amethyst House we refer to these emerging therapies (the latter set) as “Mind-Body Healing Services” which we place under the umbrella of “Restorative Self-Care”.  These services are what we specialize in and those which we are excited to make available here in our community.

What is Restorative Self-Care?

There is much evidence to suggest that all wellness services which provide rest, relaxation, lower blood pressure, clear the energy field, ground the client in the now, relax the nervous system, engage the natural pharmacy within the body, and place the body and mind in a “restful state”, are excellent options for complementary and preventative care since they reduce our stress there by boosting our natural immune response.  In essence, Restorative Self-Care may be explained as services that help clients find that restful state and then practice the art of returning to that state at regular intervals, weekly, or often enough to provide real health benefit.  In the same way one engages in 60 minutes of exercise a day for muscle and heart health, we believe humans should be spending 30-60 minutes a day doing the same for the mind-body-soul.  The process of doing this on an on-going basis is the heart of “Restorative Self-Care”.  Just like clients can exercise all by themselves, so too can clients engage in Restorative Self-Care on their own; practices like daily meditation and self Reiki are examples of this.  Still, for the same reason so many join gyms, sports teams, walking groups, Meet-Ups, and more to get in that exercise, we at Amethyst House are providing group and self Mind-Body Healing Services for those who want that social and/or task oriented help with their self-care and stress management routines.

Sometimes when I discuss Mind-Body Healing Services with peers or potential clients I sense resistance to engaging in such services because there is this preconception that we are already getting what we need in terms of rest, relaxation, self help and more, perhaps for free from friends, family and other sources.  Still, statistics would suggest otherwise.  For example, Americans spend around 800 million dollars a year (market research.com) on books about self help, therapy, psychology, mind-body therapies, spiritual education, meditation, and etc. Yet, if reading those books was making a large dent in our need for that Restorative Self-Care, we wouldn’t likely have the levels of anxiety and depression that we have, with conservatively 31% of Americans reporting to have an anxiety disorder and 37% of Americans reporting to have depression (American Psychological Association from 2021); that 37% is a little over 129 million Americans.

While a support system is important, and the love and care friends and family provide is invaluable for those that have that available, and while we can get information about Restorative Self-Care from the internet, self-help blogs and books, statistics show that actual behavioral changes (real outcomes in daily life) happen much more often when clients pursue paid restorative services involving trained coaches and wellness practitioners.  Why?  It comes down to cost, commitment, intent, being held accountable, and willingness to change.  You get what you pay for in our culture, and ‘free’ (requiring no commitment and including no expertise) usually translates to ‘forgotten’ as our unobserved, unfocused routine goes right back to its usual pattern. When we read about a new way to eat, a new way to exercise, or options for stress management, it is all passive unless we do something and are held accountable. It is very easy to quit without the coach factor.  In short, the reason to engage a professional Mind-Body Practitioner is the same as why you hire a strength trainer or a psychologist.  It helps to have a trained objective care provider paid to make it all about you, cater to your comfort, to make sure you are getting the relaxation and health benefits you need.  Let’s face it, friends are great but they have their interests in mind as well as your own, they aren’t professional healers, listeners and they aren’t being paid to hold space or objectivity.

Our Story

My business partner and I have both at times in our lives been fortunate to receive the benefit of Mind Body Services and we knew we wanted to pay it forward.  We wanted to create the healing center that we never knew we needed when we were searching for our own solutions.  We always had a strong interest in creating a space where people can learn to manage stress, develop intuition, and practice daily self care as a means to better health.  Then the Covid-19 pandemic happened and our desire only increased.  Some members of our community were facing new levels of stress, difficulties with work-life balance due to work at home and wanting more than ever to create new routines which could improve daily quality of life.

We feel so blessed that the universe positioned us with resources, means, a beautiful location, a wonderful community and an amazing business partner and, from there, the idea for Amethyst House was born.  My business partner and I realized we could marry our love of music, and skill with sound therapy, aroma therapy and science with our skills in intuition, coaching, energy healing and love of spirituality and that we could provide these amazing, well rounded, healing services to others.
